AIS-140 vs. Advanced Telematics: What Indian Fleets Need To Do

AIS-140-vs.-Advanced-Telematics

AIS-140 tells you where a vehicle is and whether it can call for help. It does not tell you why a truck is burning more fuel than it should, which driver is riding the brakes on a specific route, or which engine is heading toward a breakdown before it happens. That gap is where advanced telematics picks up, and it is becoming a real decision point for fleets that installed AIS-140 devices purely to stay legal and are now wondering what else that same investment could be doing.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • AIS-140 is a compliance floor, not a fleet management system. It defines the minimum a device must do, not the maximum a fleet can get out of vehicle data.
  • Advanced telematics builds on the same location and status feed to add engine diagnostics, fuel behaviour, driver scoring, and predictive maintenance.
  • Fleets running only AIS-140 devices are typically using a small fraction of the data their vehicles already generate.
  • The decision is not AIS-140 versus telematics. It is whether to leave AIS-140 as a standalone compliance box or connect it to a broader operational layer.
  • Predictive maintenance and fuel monitoring tend to pay for the upgrade on their own, well before any safety or compliance benefit gets counted.
  • A device that connects through the OBD port can often carry both jobs on one install, so upgrading does not automatically mean a second piece of hardware.

Quick reference: AIS-140 vs. advanced telematics

Area AIS-140 alone Advanced telematics
Purpose Regulatory compliance Operational efficiency and asset health
Data source GNSS location, panic button, tamper status ECU/OBD engine data plus location
Engine health Not covered Continuous monitoring, fault prediction
Driver behaviour Not covered Scoring, coaching, and incident review
Who it serves The regulator, at renewal time The fleet, every day

What AIS-140 was actually built to do

Where AIS-140 stops short

Engine and vehicle health sit entirely outside the standard. AIS-140 has nothing to say about engine faults, DPF status, battery condition, or early warning signs of a breakdown. A certified device can report a vehicle’s exact location while that same vehicle is quietly heading toward a costly failure, and neither the device nor the regulator would know.

Fuel behaviour is the same story. The standard does not track consumption, theft, or efficiency. Two identical trucks running the same route can post very different fuel costs, and an AIS-140 device alone will not tell you why.

Driver behaviour, including harsh braking, overspeeding patterns, and idle time, is outside AIS-140’s scope. The standard cares whether a panic button works, not how a specific driver handles a loaded truck on a wet road.

Route and utilisation insight is a separate build entirely. AIS-140 data goes to a government server for compliance purposes. Turning that same location stream into route optimisation, idle time reports, or utilisation analysis takes a layer built specifically for that job, not a byproduct of the compliance feed.

What advanced telematics adds on top

Why this decision matters now

How a fleet should actually decide

Start with what the fleet already knows is costing money. If fuel is the biggest line item and nobody can explain why two similar trucks post different numbers, fuel monitoring is the first thing to check. If breakdowns are showing up as unplanned downtime rather than scheduled repairs, predictive maintenance is the gap to close. If insurance or safety incidents are trending the wrong way, driver scoring is worth pricing out before anything else.

The mistake most fleets make is treating this as an all-or-nothing platform decision. It is closer to picking the two or three data gaps that are actually costing money and confirming the AIS-140 device already installed can carry that data without a second install.

How Intangles brings both together

Intangles holds AIS-140 (IRNSS) certification for its own device, so the compliance layer is covered from day one rather than bolted on separately later. The same OBD-connected device also feeds Intangles’ broader platform, covering predictive vehicle health monitoring, fuel and DEF monitoring, driving behaviour monitoring, and digital twin-style asset tracking.

For a fleet manager, this means the vehicle that satisfies the RTO at renewal time is the same vehicle already generating the data that flags a failing alternator, a fuel discrepancy, or a driver who needs coaching, weeks before any of those turn into an expensive problem. Fleets weighing this shift often start by checking their numbers against the kind of fleet optimization metrics that an AIS-140-only setup never surfaces.

Capability What it does
Compliance AIS-140 (IRNSS) certified, State RTO approved, registers directly to Vahan
Predictive health Flag mechanical faults before they become a roadside breakdown
Fuel and DEF monitoring Tracks consumption and flags anomalies against expected usage
Driving behaviour Scores harsh braking, acceleration, and speeding for coaching

How Intangles fits into the cost conversation

Intangles is a digital twin company serving the transportation and logistics industry across 18 countries, with more than 500,000 vehicles on its platform. Its AIS-140 (IRNSS) certified device, InGenious, connects through the OBD port, which keeps installation faster and cheaper than a hardwired unit, and streams data into InRoute, the same platform behind fuel monitoring, predictive vehicle health, and route operations.

Because the same device feeds a broader platform, the cost conversation shifts from what compliance costs to what the fleet gets back from the same install. Fleets pairing AIS-140 data with predictive maintenance have cut powertrain breakdowns by as much as 75% across the vehicles running on the platform, a figure Intangles tracks internally across its fleet base rather than one drawn from a third-party study, which changes the math on a device that might otherwise get judged purely on its purchase price.

Capability What it does
Device downtime or signal gaps AIS-140 (IRNSS) certified, State RTO approved, registers directly to Vahan
Battery backup usage patterns Flag mechanical faults before they turn into a roadside breakdown
Panic button and emergency events Tracks consumption and flags anomalies against expected usage
Vehicle registry drift Turns the same certified feed into route, idle time, and utilisation reporting

Frequently Asked Questions

Is advanced telematics a replacement for AIS-140?

No. AIS-140 remains a legal requirement for mandated vehicle categories regardless of what other telematics a fleet runs. Advanced telematics sits alongside it, adding operational data that the compliance standard was never built to cover.

Some can, depending on the device and platform. A device that connects through the OBD port and comes from a provider running a broader platform behind it can carry both the compliance layer and operational monitoring on the same hardware.

Usually fuel. AIS-140 has no visibility into consumption or efficiency, and fuel is often the highest controllable cost in a fleet’s budget, which makes it the first thing fleet managers look to add once they move past basic compliance.

Not necessarily. Providers that build their own AIS-140 certified device around a broader platform can deliver both from a single installation, instead of running a separate compliance device alongside a separate telematics unit.

It depends on fleet size and vehicle usage, but predictive maintenance and fuel monitoring tend to show measurable savings even at modest scales, since both address costs that accumulate per vehicle regardless of how many vehicles are on the road.
