Is DEF the same as AdBlue?
Yes, DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) is the generic/US term; AdBlue is the trademarked name used mainly in Europe and other markets for the
same urea-based fluid used in SCR emissions systems. Monitoring needs are identical regardless of which name a fleet uses.
What is DEF and why does it need monitoring?
Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is a nontoxic, urea-based fluid injected into the exhaust of SCR-equipped diesel engines to break down harmful NOx emissions into nitrogen and water vapor. Running low or using poor-quality DEF can derate the engine, increase emissions, and trigger compliance violations.
What happens if DEF runs out on the road?
Most SCR-equipped engines are programmed to reduce power (derate) or eventually prevent restart once DEF is depleted, to enforce emissions compliance, making real-time level visibility important for avoiding unplanned downtime.
