Situation

  • One of North America’s top regional transit agencies in California with a fleet of over 150 vehicles including heavy duty and light duty buses manufactured by Gillig and New Flyer.
  • Most of these buses are outside of their warranty periods which is why a predictive analytics platform like Intangles has proved to be beneficial.
  • The fleet has been struggling with idling and excessive speeding in its bus fleet.
  • Their existing software lacked the ability to monitor and capture data, Inaccurate data was proving to inconclusive, hence making the fleet inefficient. Resulting in higher fuel consumption and operational costs.
  • The agency sought a solution to reduce fuel waste, improve driver behavior, and increase overall efficiency, so that they could reduce operating costs and improve safety scores of their fleet?

Solution

The agency implemented Intangles AI on a 15-bus pilot enabling real-time alerts for excessive idling, speeding, and high temperature issues. Intangles Predictive analytical tool detected several high temperature issues preventing breakdowns in the middle of a very hot summer. Immediate corrective actions were taken, preventing potential breakdowns during peak summer heat.

Success

  • Reduced Idling Time: Intangles identified excessive idling due to incorrect beliefs about air conditioning needs, resulting in a reduction of approximately 150 hours of idling per week.
  • Fuel Savings: Reduced idling and improved monitoring led to a 4% decrease in fuel consumption, saving the agency $3,872 per month.
  • Improved Driver Behavior: The system identified eight drivers responsible for most speeding violations. Targeted re-training improved safety and fuel efficiency, increasing miles per gallon (MPG).

Outcome

The Central California Transit agency became Intangles AI’s first paying customer in the North American transit sector, setting an example for other agencies to follow.
