School Bus Safety, Measured on the Road
Beyond the Rulebook: What 75,000+ Incidents Reveal About School Bus Safety in India
A school bus checks a lot of safety boxes. But does it tell us how safely a child is being driven? Intangles analysed six months of real-world driving behaviour across 598 school buses in 61 cities to find out.
This report analyses 75,000+ flagged driving events across 598 school buses in 61 cities between January and June 2026 to reveal what happens between the bus stop and the school gate.

METHODOLOGY
The rulebook checks the bus. We checked the journey.
Speed governors, attendants, window grills, GPS tracking and helpline numbers give parents assurance — but they don’t reveal what happens on the road. Intangles looked beyond the obvious factors at four behaviours that reduce control over vehicle stability
Hard Braking
Sudden deceleration — the passenger feels it before anyone else does.
Harsh Acceleration
Aggressive acceleration, often when brief openings appear in traffic.
Speeding
Exceeding the legally mandated 40 km/h speed limit for school buses.
Coasting
Driving in neutral or with the engine switched off — reduced control on vehicle stability.
